Recent News Events are Affecting Workers' Compensation Costs

Your workers’ compensation costs may be significantly affected by events which have occurred in the past weeks:

  • Calif. Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner announced July 7 that he was rejecting any increase for July 1, ’09 in the California workers’ compensation “pure premium rates”.  In doing so, Poizner ignored his own staff who had issued a preliminary ruling for a 13.5% increase, which was quite a bit less than the 23.5% proposed by the WCIRB.
  • Poizner delayed his decision so long that insurers handling the vast majority of California’s market had already announced rate increases ranging from increases of 4% to 33%, with most in the 10% range.
  • The underwriting ratio for all California workers’ compensation insurers have recently been growing more unfavorable. The following was issued 6/25/09
